Sugilite is composed of a complex manganese-rich silicate that gives it its signature shades of lavender, violet, and deep plum. High-quality sugilite is increasingly scarce, making it especially desirable among collectors. It is often cut into cabochons to highlight its smooth, glowing surface. In jewelry, sugilite pairs beautifully with sterling silver, white gold, and platinum. Many people are drawn to it not only for its color, but also for its reputation as a stone of positive energy and protection.
Sugilite is sometimes called the “grape jelly stone” because the finest pieces look like rich purple jelly.
It was named after Ken-ichi Sugi, the Japanese geologist who discovered it in 1944.
-Even though it was first found in Japan, most gem-quality sugilite comes from South Africa.
-Truly deep purple sugilite is so rare that it can be more valuable than many traditional gemstones.
-Some pieces naturally glow under ultraviolet light, giving them an extra touch of mystery.
