Amethyst is a popular purple variety of the quartz mineral, prized as a semi-precious gemstone for its range of violet hues, from pale lilac to deep royal purple, valued in jewelry and carvings. Its color comes from iron impurities and natural radiation, forming in volcanic geodes, and it's historically associated with preventing intoxication and is a February birthstone.
