Linda Manion was raised in an environment where she rode horses, participating in competitions involving hunters and jumpers. From a young age, she began creating drawings of these horses, often gifting portraits to her friends. Her artistic repertoire encompasses depictions of individuals, their children, and pets. She noted that having a horse during her childhood fostered a sense of observation and appreciation that remains with her throughout life.
"In my early works, which were primarily in black and white, I harbored a desire to eventually transition to color. However, like many artists, the timing of this transition is unpredictable.”
“The versatility of pastels, ranging from soft tones to vibrant brilliance, has provided me with numerous opportunities for each composition." By utilizing reference photographs, her realistic style captures dynamic elements within her work. As a self-taught artist, she regards pastels as a powerful medium that can effectively mimic a 'painted process'. "I was thrilled to discover that my unique technique with pastels could achieve a level of detail comparable to that found in other well-known mediums."
Whistle Stop Cafe is the 2020 World Champion Racing American Quarter Horse, as recognized by the Paulick Report. She enjoys an undefeated 2020 season, winning all six of her starts, including major victories in the Heritage Place Juvenile, Rainbow Futurity (G1), and the prestigious All American Futurity (G1).
Her career earnings surpass $2 million, making her the all-time leading Quarter Horse distaff earner at the time of her retirement—surpassing even two-time World Champion Refrigerator. After finishing her career with nine consecutive wins and total earnings of $2,141,819, she retires in 2021 as an undefeated champion.
Whistle Stop Cafe also earns the Supreme Race Horse award, a distinction reserved for Quarter Horses with over $500,000 in earnings, at least 10 wins, and multiple Grade 1 stakes victories. Bred by Bobby D. Cox and owned by Lainie Whitmire of Whitmire Ranch, she is out of the Mr Jess Perry mare Sinuous. Her dominance on the track and consistent performances make her a fan favorite at Ruidoso Downs.
