David S. Mitchell was born in Eunice, New Mexico in 1948. Two years later the family was transplanted to West Texas where David lived for the next 58 years. Completing the cycle, David retired from the field of education in 2008 and moved to Ruidoso, New Mexico where he and his wife, Sandra, now reside.
David holds a bachelor’s degree in All Level Art and a master’s degree in Education Leadership. He served as a teacher, coach, principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent during his 29 year career in education.
In addition to training at the college level at Sul Ross State University, David has also studied under the leadership of Phillip Payne, Lincoln Fox, and Patricia Huckins. David also worked in the production facility for Dave McGary as a painter of his bronze sculptures for two summers while on school summer vacations.
A deep appreciation for the beauty of the Southwest, coupled with an appreciation for the art and culture of the Native American are the driving forces behind David’s work. Having concentrated for so many years on painting and pen and ink work, David has recently completed his first bronze sculpture, “Once Majestic”. “This venture into bronze media has been a dream of mine for many years, and I am so excited about having accomplished this dream.”
