Stage travel along the Overland Trail was the fastest travel west for a traveler of the 1860's. But even then a fast moving cold front could hold up a coach for days. The worst times were when the horses would wear out breaking through drifts or breaking trail, and the stage would become snowbound leaving everyone to walk to the next way station. And in those days they weren't complaining 'bout their luggage getting left behind.
